WHAT IS IT?

Day On the Hill is a two-day leadership, advocacy, and student success experience in Washington, DC that brings together Our HBCUs Matter Foundation board members, staff, scholars, corporate partners, and federal stakeholders. The program combines strategic planning, organizational development, and corporate exposure to strengthen institutional capacity while providing scholars with firsthand insight into nonprofit leadership, workforce pathways, and governance. Key components include board and staff convening, program and financial reviews, and a corporate immersion experience focused on career exposure and professional development.

The experience culminates in federal engagement and advocacy, where scholars and organizational leadership meet with Members of Congress, Senate staff, the White House HBCU Initiative, and foundation partners. Participants present the organization’s mission, student success initiatives, and funding approaches while elevating scholar voices and lived experiences. On the Hill advances national conversations around HBCU support, funding equity, and workforce alignment, while reinforcing pathways that improve college enrollment, retention, graduation, and career employment outcomes.

Our scholars are immersed in national conferences and leadership institutes throughout their high school and collegiate journeys to build exposure, professional networks, and career readiness. These experiences connect students directly to industry leaders, graduate programs, employers, policymakers, and national organizations while reinforcing leadership development, civic engagement, and professional identity. Through intentional participation, scholars gain access to mentorship, internships, graduate school pipelines, and employment opportunities aligned with their academic and career goals.

Conference immersion includes participation in the Ambassador Andrew Young Leadership Institute, White House HBCU Week, the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Conference, the National Black Nurses Association Conference, the National Black Society of Engineers (NSBE) Conference, the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference (CBC ALC), the National Black Educators Conference, and the National Black Accountants Conference. These experiences expand scholars’ social capital, strengthen leadership skills, and increase college persistence, graduation, and career placement outcomes across diverse industries.
