ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

This mission includes providing financial assistance to students pursuing higher education. Scholarships have been integral to the Our HBCUs Matter Foundation. The Our HBCUs Matter, Foundation Inc® Corporate Partner Scholarship program is supported by donations from companies and individuals committed to cultivating the next generation of business leaders. Each year, we invite corporate and philanthropic sponsors to join us in working to expand educational opportunities for talented students.

SCHOLASHIP SELECTION CRITERIA

The selection criteria for the Scholars were created via our OHMF Scholar Rubric.

-3.0 GPA

-Direct Recommendation from Dean/Director

-Must be a Undergraduate or Graduate Student at a HBCU

-Complete the HBCU Scholar Cohort Application

-Complete the HBCU Scholar Cohort Interview

-Complete the Professional Development Intensive Sessions

-Good Attendance in Scholar Program

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Our HBCUs Matter Foundation, Inc. proudly introduces the “My Money, My Legacy” Program, an innovative initiative designed to equip undergraduate students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with essential money management skills to secure their financial future. This program integrates a comprehensive Money Management Curriculum tailored specifically to address the unique needs and challenges faced by HBCU students. Through a series of engaging workshops and interactive sessions, participants will embark on a transformative journey to financial literacy and empowerment.

WHAT DO STUDENTS LEARN?

  • Foundational Financial Concepts: Students gain a comprehensive understanding of fundamental financial principles, including budgeting, saving, investing, credit management, and debt management, equipping them with essential skills for navigating their financial futures effectively.

  • Practical Money Management Strategies: Through interactive workshops and hands-on activities, students learn practical strategies for creating and maintaining budgets, tracking expenses, setting financial goals, and making informed spending decisions tailored to their individual needs and aspirations.

  • Risk Management and Protection: The program educates students on the importance of protecting their financial well-being through responsible credit card usage, effective debt management strategies, fraud prevention, and consumer rights awareness, empowering them to safeguard their financial assets and mitigate risks.

  • Long-Term Financial Planning: Students are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to plan for their long-term financial goals, including understanding the importance of saving and investing, preparing for life transitions such as transitioning to the workforce or pursuing higher education, and building financial resilience to overcome setbacks and achieve financial independence.

ABOUT THE PLATFORM & PROGRAM

The HBCU-HUB Hire Platform & Program provides our corporate and federal partners to recruit, network, and engage with HBCU Students, High School Students, faculty, staff, and educators. Renewal of the HBCU Hire Platform is on an annual basis. Scholars are able to receive professional development, establish mentors at corporations, and gain access to resources on internships and jobs. Our team includes alumni from major HBCUs as well as industry specialists in human resources, information technology, engineering, healthcare, and business. The purpose of HBCU Hire is to deliver a tailored hiring experience for candidates seeking profitable employment opportunities with well-known organizations.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Home Away from Home, is our Scholar Support Program. We provide assistance with food, toiletries, college move-in essentials, and internship/job relocation for Scholars. A recent report, titled Basic Needs Inse­cu­ri­ty at His­tor­i­cal­ly Black Col­leges and Uni­ver­si­ties, exam­ines these issues and shares rec­om­men­da­tions to address them. The pub­li­ca­tion, fund­ed by the Annie E. Casey Foun­da­tion, draws on find­ings from a sur­vey admin­is­tered to near­ly 5,000 stu­dents from 14 pub­lic and pri­vate four-year HBCUs. Nation­wide, 75% of stu­dents at HBCUs are Pell Grant recip­i­ents.
